Join us this weekend (weather permitting) for Giancarlo Menotti’s beloved one-act opera, Amahl and the Night Visitors. This family-friendly production is perfect for all ages, lasting just 45 minutes. We encourage you to bring your friends and family to this delightful performance. Proceeds will support the Scotland Trip Fund, providing scholarships for our choir’s trip to Scotland this summer.

About the Story

Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the tale of Amahl, a young shepherd boy with a disability, and his mother, who host three wise men—Kaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar—on their way to visit the baby Jesus. The kings are entertained by Amahl, his mother, and the shepherds. In a moment of desperation, Amahl’s mother attempts to take some of the kings’ gold to help her son but is forgiven. Inspired, Amahl offers his crutch as a gift for Jesus and, through a miraculous act of the Holy Spirit, is healed.

Opera for All

For those new to opera, don’t let the word intimidate you! Think of it as the original musical theater—a blend of singing, acting, and storytelling where every line is sung.

Menotti composed Amahl for NBC’s 1951 Christmas Eve broadcast. His inspiration came from Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych, *The Adoration of the Magi*, which he encountered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The painting features shepherds, the Magi, and their entourage, along with other fascinating details. Menotti’s memories of Christmas in Italy, where the Three Kings brought gifts instead of Santa Claus, combined to create the story line.  Menotti wrote both the music and the text.

About the Cast

This year’s cast comes entirely from our All Saints choir program:

  • The Mother:  Karine Marshall, an accomplished lyric soprano.

  • Amahl: Soren Marshall, her son, who brings youthful charm and talent to the role.

  • The Three Kings: Philip Tickle (Balthazaar), Sam Robinson (Melchior), and Nick Brata (Kaspar).

  • The Page: Abby Brata.

  • The Shepherds’ Chorus: Comprised of many of our talented choristers.

Accompaniment will be provided by Daniel Stipe on the organ and Scott Hayes on the piano.

We hope you’ll join us for this heartwarming production, which beautifully captures the spirit of Epiphany (which began Monday, January 6). If weather conditions force a rescheduling, the performance will take place on Friday, January 17, at 7 PM. Any changes will be communicated via email, social media, and this website.

We look forward to seeing you there!
